Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per chevron dovetailed Argent and Sable, in chief a pair of wings conjoined Azure and in base two lightning flashes chevronwise Tenn fimbriated of the first.  Attached below the shield a Silver scroll doubled back and inscribed FIRST TO KNOW in Black letters.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue is the color associated with Aviation organizations and whit the white alludes to the sky and clouds.  The black chevron represents armor as the spearhead of land assault and the dovetail partition suggests the close association of the predecessor, the 502d Aviation Battalion, with the armored elements of the division.  The lightning flashes are symbolic of radio relay and radar surveillance.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 502d Aviation Battalion on 29 October 1963.  It was rescinded on 8 July 1976.  It was reinstated for the 502d Aviation Battalion and amended to change the colors of the wings on the shield effective 1 October 1980.  The insignia was redesignated for the 502d Aviation Regiment with the description and symbolism revised on 30 June 1989.
